The NHS is responsible for ensuring that the needs of the Armed Forces, Veterans and their Families are met and that there is clear access to services.
Those leaving the armed forces are given a summary of their medical records, which they are advised to give to their GP when they register. The Department of Health advises GP practices that it’s good practice to record veteran status in their medical record using the Read code ‘History Relating to Military Service’: 13JY.
All military veterans are entitled to priority access to NHS hospital care for any condition as long as it's related to their service, regardless of whether or not they receive a war pension.
When referring a veteran with such a condition, the referral should include a statement that the health condition may be related to the patient’s military service. The responsibility then rests with the provider clinician reading the referral to take into account the patient’s status and to bring forward the appointment, if appropriate. This process takes into account the condition of other patients waiting to be seen.
